Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard visited St James Parish School in Sebastopol to speak with students about climate change and to celebrate the school receiving accreditation to become a 3 Star ResourceSmart School.

“ResourceSmart Schools is a Victorian Government initiative that helps schools to reduce costs while giving students the opportunity to learn about sustainability and our environment,” Mr Howard said.

“Participating schools take action to minimise waste, save energy and water, promote biodiversity and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

“Students at St James Parish School have been recognised for their work integrating sustainable practices into many of their projects to earn a 3-Star ResourceSmart Schools accreditation.

“This includes creating a school vegie garden with composting; organising plastic free wrapping days for school lunches; changing over to energy saving light bulbs; signage on light switches and taps promoting efficient usage; and publishing articles about sustainability in the school newsletter.

“I’d like to congratulate the school for their commitment to our environment by teaching students in a practical way about taking action on climate change.”

More than 1300 Victorian schools have signed up to ResourceSmart Schools.

Since 2008 Victorian schools have saved millions of dollars on energy costs, with an average annual saving of $1.3 million dollars.
