Opening Highlights demise of TAFE
Geoff Howard MP, State Member for Ballarat East, today attended the opening of Ballarat Technology Park- Central with Premier Denis Napthine.
Premier Dennis Napthine spoke at the opening and unveiled a plaque to recognize this new enterprise of Federation University.
Mr Howard said that as an ongoing supporter of the University of Ballarat, now Federation University Australia, he wished this new centre much success.
But he expressed his disappointment that the new centre, located at the former SMB Ballarat Brewery Complex, came at the expense of TAFE courses previously taught at the site.
“Not very long ago this building used to be a central part of a busy TAFE campus where so many students undertook valuable skills training,” Mr Howard said.’
“Having these students in central Ballarat not only created a vibrant centre for learning but bought economic benefits to adjoining businesses in the CBD.”
“While Mr Napthine may continue to argue that his government didn’t cut TAFE funding, the former SMB site has now been decimated as a TAFE learning centre.”
“Mr Napthine should hang his head in shame as he knows that so many buildings on the formerly vibrant SMB TAFE site are having to be put to other uses,” declared Mr Howard.
