Local jobs will receive a boost with works to get underway on the State Library of Victoria’s new collection storage facility at Mount Helen.

Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard announced building company Hansen Yuncken had been appointed to deliver the new state-of-the-art Ballarat Off-Site Store (BOSS2).

“Ballarat is already home to more than half of the State Library’s extensive collection here at BOSS1 in Mount Helen,” Mr Howard said.

“This includes items of national significance such as the waistcoat worn by Captain Cook, as well as precious local history like rare glass plate negatives that reveal early images of Ballarat.

“With BOSS1 expected to reach capacity by end of 2017, funding of $21.4 million has been provided by the Andrews Labor Government to deliver an additional facility here in Ballarat.

“It will augment the existing offsite store, accommodating an ever-expanding collection and importantly, it will also make more of the collection accessible with the creation of a digitisation studio on site.

“By effectively opening up the vault, people can look forward to accessing these amazing cultural, scientific and historical records online.

“Construction firm Hansen Yuncken has been appointed to deliver the project, with a commitment to using local tradespeople and suppliers throughout the construction works.

“Not only is Ballarat regional Victoria’s home of historic and cultural activity but the Andrews Labor Government’s pipeline of infrastructure investment is paying dividends for local job creation.”
