Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard welcomed the start of works on a $2 million project that will deliver major safety improvements to reduce the risk of serious crashes at the intersection of Ballarat-Carngham Road and Haddon-Windermere Road.

“People in regional Victoria often travel long distances on our roads to get to work, schools and to shop for their families,” Mr Howard said.

“The intersection of Ballarat-Carngham Road and Haddon-Windermere Road has seen a 63 per cent increase in traffic over the past five years, along with a number of serious crashes occurring over the same period.

“The majority of these crashes were in dim light or dark conditions.

“This is a high risk intersection because of its location on a high speed rural road, but that’s no excuse to do nothing about it.

“The Andrews Labor Government wants to ensure that people travelling on rural roads can expect to arrive home safely.

“That’s why we’re delivering $2 million with works starting today to install a roundabout at intersection, with new street lighting to improve visibility and safety for all road users.

“A new roundabout will not only help to reduce traffic speed, but also the likelihood of crashes and serious injuries.”

Other work includes new line-marking and landscaping.

These works are part of the Safe System Road Infrastructure Program (SSRIP), which is funded through the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and developed and delivered by VicRoads.

The roundabout is due to be completed by the middle of this year.
