LABOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORTING TAFE AND TRAINING IN BALLARAT

The Andrews Labor Government is restoring TAFE to Ballarat to make sure locals can access quality training to get the skills they need for the job they want.

Member for Wendouree Sharon Knight and Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard today announced $5.5 million for Federation University to boost its TAFE delivery, create a Ballarat Skills and Jobs Centre, and to help locals find rewarding work.

The former Liberal Government gutted TAFE and neglected the needs of Ballarat locals during their four years of mismanaging the training system.

Part of the Labor Government’s plan to revitalise TAFE in the region includes $5 million for Federation University to redevelop the Flecknoe building, which will help link students with industry to help them get a job.

The Flecknoe building redevelopment will allow Fed Uni’s TAFE division to co-locate with businesses and provide real-world, project-based skills training, particularly in information technology and business.

It will allow the institute to develop stronger pathways from vocational to higher education.

Bringing industry and Fed Uni TAFE together will expand teaching and learning provision and provide job opportunities for local students which would not have been delivered at the campus without this investment from the Labor Government.

Another $500,000 will be used to create the Ballarat Skills and Jobs Centre which will be the first point-of-call for students looking to start training, workers needing to reskill, unemployed workers needing support for retraining and work placement and for employers.

It’s part of the Labor Government’s $15 million election commitment to establish one-stop-shop Skills and Jobs Centres across Victoria.

Unlike the Liberals, Labor won’t leave Ballarat locals high and dry without access to quality training which leads to jobs.

In June Federation University received $2.9 million from the Labor Government’s $50 million Back to Work Fund to help more than 300 young people in the region gain an apprenticeship or traineeship.
