Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard today visited the Barkly Campus of Ballarat Secondary College to announce that he was keen to explore future uses for the site following the impending closure of the campus at the end of the current school year.

“The Andrews Government’s investment to upgrade East and Wendouree Campuses will see all senior school classes offered at those campuses from next year,” Mr Howard said.

“While this senior campus has served the school community well for over 20 years, the facilities are now surplus to the school’s requirements.

“I recognise that this is a fantastic community asset in a great location, accessible by public transport and close to services and amenities.

“With a range of useful buildings and off street parking, I want to be in a position to advise the government how the Ballarat community could best put these facilities to good use.

“Too often we see community assets become derelict which adds additional costs and challenges before they can be brought back up to scratch again.

“I’ll be convening a meeting at my office on Monday 3 October at 12:00pm to explore what ideas people have about future use for these school buildings, so they can continue to serve Ballarat as an important community asset.

“People may have short term proposals that will see the site maintained and well managed while possible sustainable ongoing proposals for the site are considered.

“I’ll be taking these ideas to government to ensure we get an outcome that delivers the maximum community benefit.”
