COMMUNITY FEEDBACK TO INSPIRE CREATION OF CANADIAN PARK

State Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard today announced that community consultation will commence tomorrow for the creation of the Canadian State Park.

“The creation of this park on the eastern edge of Ballarat presents an exciting opportunity to protect and enhance our forested skyline, while opening up new opportunities for recreational land users on our doorstep,” Mr Howard said.

“Comprising the existing Canadian State Forest and former Victorian Plantation Corporation (VPC) plantation land in the Mt Clear area, the park will cover around 600 hectares.

“By creating a new wildlife corridor and protecting green space we will expand local recreation and tourism opportunities.

“I encourage existing user groups of the Canadian forest, adjacent residents and the wider community to take this opportunity to have a say in the restoration of this vital natural resource.

“Community feedback will contribute to the discussion about how the park could be used and what activities will occur within its boundaries.”

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is working in partnership with local authorities and the key community stakeholder group, the Friends of the Canadian Corridor to conduct community consultation throughout April.

Two public information sessions will be held at The Earth Education Centre at Mt Clear Secondary College, Olympic Drive, Mt Clear on:

  • Friday 17 April, 3:30pm – 7:00pm
  • Saturday 18 April, 11:00am – 4:00pm

Submissions can be made online up until 5:00pm, Thursday 30 April 2015 by visiting: www.delwp.vic.gov.au/canadian-park

Recommendations from the community will be forwarded to the Minister by the end of May. For further enquiries contact the DELWP Customer Service Centre on: 136 186.
