The Andrews Labor Government will investigate options for a new road connecting the Midland Highway and Western Freeway, to reduce the number of trucks travelling through Buninyong and Ballarat.

Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard has announced a $150,000 feasibility study to investigate a potential transport link to the east of Ballarat, which has long been discussed in the local community.

As Buninyong continues to grow, there is increasing concern within the community about the amount of traffic and in particular heavy vehicles travelling through the town.

The feasibility study will investigate current traffic conditions, projections of traffic growth and potential options to minimise the impacts on the Buninyong area.

The scope of any eastern road link would include investigating the potential upgrade of Yankee Flat Road, between Warrenheip and Mt Buninyong.

Over the next 12 months, VicRoads will engage with the community as part of the feasibility study.

Quotes attributable to Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard

“This is a major step towards the much talked about Ballarat eastern road link that I have long advocated for.

“It will provide a quicker access road for the people of Buninyong, Mount Helen and Mount Clear that avoids the populated areas of Ballarat. It will also deliver an important link for those seeking to travel from the Western Highway to Geelong.

“We know that the community wants to get trucks and heavy vehicles out of the centre of Buninyong and onto a purpose built route – that’s why we’re investing in this vital planning work.”
