The electorate of Buninyong is diverse with a range of living environments. It is a 3,107km² part-urban and part-rural electorate including the southern suburbs of Ballarat; running east through Ballan to West Maddingley, south through Meredith to Lethbridge and west to Linton. The electorate had a population of 40,891 voters at the 2014 state election.

Ballarat East was one of the earliest districts of the Legislative Assembly, having been created for the second state election in 1859.
